I saw this show before it opened, and the preview ticket price was €15 for all seats—so that was a nice surprise. I ended up with what would have been a €30 seat on a regular performance night.
I was so excited to see a play at the Abbey. Since it's a theatre, we studied in my theatre history classes.
A Month in the Country was well-acted and complete, with a simple yet effective set. The set changes took too long sometimes, but for the most part I wasn't bothered by them. The actor playing the doctor was especially funny, I enjoyed his performance very much.
The play is about a woman bored with both her husband and her lover, so she starts lusting after her son's tutor. Her adopted daughter also loves the tutor, but the tutor loves the woman, and her lover knows all this, but her husband doesn't, and round and round we go. There are other relationships being formed, too.
At times, the play felt a little long, but it was always funny enough to make me want to keep watching, and twisted up enough that you couldn't help but wonder if anyone would end up happy at all.
If you're in Dublin within the next month, definitely reserve an evening to see this play before heading out to the pubs. In fact, see anything at the Abbey, whenever you happen to be there—it is Ireland's most famous theatre, and you're almost guaranteed a great show.
