Description
Once long ago (circa 1959) and faraway (circa Broadway) Mary Rodgers wrote an ingenious rendition of Hans Christian Andersen's classic 'The Princess and The Pea.' Roger's 1960 Tony Award nominee 'Once Upon a Mattress' tells the story of the courtship woes faced by Prince Dauntless the Drab (Rudy Guerrero) and his prospective suitor Princess Winnifred the Woebegone (Lea DeLaria) and is one of the most comic productions ever to take place at the Eureka Theatre. In an effort to lift the marriage embargo placed by the austere Queen (Milissa Carey), members of the royal court must engage in a series of comic feats to ensure marriage between the story's unlikely hero and heroine. Presented by San Francisco's '42nd Street Moon' theatre company, this performance features special guest star Lea DeLaria of ('On the Town' and 'The Rocky Horror Show') as Princess Winnifred, a role originally starring Carol Burnett. DeLaria's improvisational tongue and cheek comic disposition brings new life to the role and inspires viewers in musical numbers such as 'The Swamps of Home.' Nominated for the Best Revival of a Musical in 1997 for the production featuring Sara Jessica Parker, this musical farce is sure to inspire laughter from even the most delicate viewer. Credits include lyrics by Marshall Barer, stage direction by Wayne Bryan, musical direction by Dave Dobrusky, and choreography by Tom Segal. True to its fairy tale tradition, 'Once Upon a Mattress' is sure to make audiences believe in happily ever after.
