Old Montreal, the Notre-Dame Basilica is one of the most famous landmarks in Canada. Designed by James O’Donnell, who is currently the only person buried in the church, Notre-Dame only took five years to build. The interior took much longer to complete, and visitors are often awe-struck by the beautiful colors used to decorate the intricate woodwork and stained glass of the cathedral. Mass still takes place inside the basilica, and many visitors enjoy seeing the famous pipe organ at work. The basilica is also used for funerals and weddings for famous Canadians (Celine Dion’s wedding was held here). A smaller chapel, the Chapel of the Sacred Heart, was built next to the basilica to allow for smaller congregations.
