The Jewel in the Crown

There are quite a few small theatres and troupes in Halifax but the jewel in the crown is undoubtedly Neptune Theatre. The site has hosted a theatre for many, many years before that, beginning in 1915 but spending 30 years as a movie house. It was established and rebuilt as a theatre in 1963 and has grown with many successes since then.

After an expansion in the 1990s, the theatre has a mainstage and a smaller more intimate stage and there's a theatre school and summer camps as well. Check the website for information there.

The theatre puts on a variety of performances, from musicals, to classic plays to new plays by Canadian writers. Season runs mid September until June or July if a production is held over. The last production of the season is usually a big musical and there's always a special show for the Christmas season.

Tickets vary in price, you can purchase season tickets or 2-play tickets with various options. Check the website. They often do student matinees as well. Purchase tickets online, by phone, fax or in person. Box office is open 9 - 5 weekdays and noon to 5 Saturdays.
