This is an amazing, specialist cheese shop. It sells almost English cheese from the British Isles (including Ireland), with varieties you won't have heard of, and variations of old English favourites that you have only tasted in inferior versions.

It looks amazing when you walk in - huge wheels of cheddar hanging, different smaller quantities such as Red Leicester, Stilton, and Cheshire all around. They also sell local varieties from around the country, with odd names – Stinking Bishop is one I was reluctant to try, but when I was finally pushed into eating some I found it delicious. The shop is happy to advise you on how to keep your cheeses, what to eat them with, and what kinds of wine might go well with them. They also sell different lovely breads, including a great walnut and raison variety, French flour-dusted loaves, soda and sour bread, and tomato and olive rolls. In addition they sell many other things to eat with your cheese - olives, sundried tomatoes, etc. My boyfriend is very fussy about his olives, having been brought up in a country where eating olives is an art form, but he is almost happy with the ones he buys here! My grandmother is particularly fond out their quince jelly – a set block of delicately flavoured quince paste which goes very well with salad and oatcakes.

I've come here a few times just to pick up materials for a picnic in a park somewhere - you can buy cheese in small quantities as well as by the ton! Add a loaf of bread, a few olives and pickled gerkins, and you’re away!
