During the summer months, a top destination for concertgoers is the splendid outdoor amphitheater on the Oakland University campus. The Meadow Brook Festival offers a lineup of about four dozen shows, including at least a dozen performances by the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. Big-name national pop, rock and folk musicians are frequent attractions. The covered pavilion is flanked on three sides by a grassy seating area well suited for picnicking, though some of the hillsides are steep and trees and the pavilion itself can obscure sight lines, so jockeying for prime seats is an art. Acoustics are excellent, and the hilly, cool, semi-rural setting makes for memorable summer nights.
