Description
You may remember Little Shop of Horrors from the 1960 Roger Corman film, or the 1986 remake starring Rick Moranis and Steve Martin, but you'll never forget this musical performance. The best that movies of a bygone era could do was 3-D when it appeared as if things on screen leaped out at you. How would you handle yourself in a theater with the atrocious, bloodthirsty, Mini Cooper-sized beast devouring humans just a few feet away? With the stage production of Little Shop of Horrors, the creature literally leaves the stage and comes at the audience. It is simultaneously frightening, shocking and funny at the same time--everything you expect from live theatre, and Little Shop of Horrors has it in spades! As the story goes, Mr. Mushnik, played by Lenny Wolpe, is the owner of a Skid Row floral shop subject to close any day due to lack of business. Thankfully, Seymour, botanist and store employee played by Anthony Rapp, discovers a new and rare genus of plant. When he learns that the shrub, Audrey II, feeds exclusively on human blood, he finds himself amidst a Faustian bargain. In an effort to capture the heart of his fellow shop employee, Audrey, played by Tari Kelly, Seymour must keep feeding the plant to sustain his own wealth and fame. Created by The Jim Henson Workshop and Martin P. Robinson, with authentic movements and voice over by Michael James Leslie, Audrey II will astound you. Combining a hip, edgy style with kooky, outlandish characters and snappy music, Little Shop of Horrors is an unforgettable event for everyone. Directed by Jerry Zaks and choreographed by Kathleen Marshall, the musical is showing at the Golden Gate Theatre from November 10 through December 5.
