'Le Boy' - the best gay club in Brazil...

Normally, you wouldn't associate gay life with South America.

It has the reputation for Roman Catholicism, machismo and extended families. But every continent has it's own paralell nightlife for it's gay population. In places like Ecuador, Peru and Chile it is not so public. But Argentina, Colombia and Venezuela it is very open and Buenos Aires has a gay scene as big as Madrid or Chicago.

Best of all is Brazil with Sao Paulo, Salvador and Rio de Janeiro leading the way.

The cream of the crop is 'Le Boy' in Aproador. I would rank it as one of the top five gay clubs in the world - up there with 'Heaven' in London, 'Splash' in New York and 'Le Queen' in Paris. It is the brainchild of a Frenchman Pierre Gilles who came to Rio in the eighties and never left. He keeps it fresh, erotic and exciting week after week and year after year. It is situated along Rua Pompeia which is between the western end of Copacabana and the eastern end of Ipanema in a very posh neighbourhood. Although you are fine walking there in the evening when you leave in the early hours I would recommend a taxi.

Entrance costs 15 reals (accompanying women have to pay 20 reals) and they have a interesting drink payment system. You buy drink tickets for a couple of reals from a caixa (kiosk) at the door. Once you have your drink coupons you can go to the massive circular bar in the centre and hand them over for chopp (draught) beers (one token) or a capirinha (two tokens). But the place itself is enormous, at least 70 ft long. At one end is a stage, at the other toilets and entrance - a giant bar is in the centre and stairs and balconies overlook it all. The disco is packed every night of the week but particularly on a Friday night with probably the best looking clientele I have ever seen. Cariocas spend all day working out or tanning on the beach so the place is full of buff beautiful adonis'

But most are there to have a good time and I met nothing but genuine people. The music is South American techno (with a couple of Madonna tracks thrown in) and by 11.00pm the dancefloor is heaving. Go-go dancers perform for the crowds, two on the bar, two on podiums above the dancefloor. They get paid 15 reals an hour to gyrate to the music just clutching a small towel.

I won't tell you how they keep that towel up...I'll leave it for your imagination....

Le Boy

No matter what others may say, Gilles Lascard, the French owner of Le Boy, knows how to make a happening of his disco. It's the biggest one for gays in town. And if you don't feel comfortable with all the women around you when you go dancing, don't worry about it there: they charge almost double for the ladies who insist on getting inside.
