This small basement space, apart from offering some of the best local jazz acts in the city, positively oozes ambiance. Entrance is through the lobby area of the U Staré Pani hotel, where you descend a stairway that is lit on both sides with small votive candles. The atmosphere is continued downstairs in the club where muted lighting is augmented by votive candles at each table. A predominantly orange and black color scheme and exposed ductwork combine to give an effect that is modern, yet romantic.
The cover charge is 200 Kc ($8), unless you are a hotel guest: in that case admission is free. Beers are about 35Kc ($1.35); wines, cocktails, champagne and soft drinks are also available. If you’re hungry, food is available as well. The menu offers such diverse fare as Thai staple Tom Kha Kai soup, smoked salmon, and a platter of assorted cheeses. The club is open nightly from 7pm to 2am, with live jazz from 9pm onwards.
The evening I was there, the piano, bass, drums, sax, and vocals of the Peter Lipa band provided the evening’s entertainment. The club is a popular place, and likely to get crowded fairly early. In fact, chances are, you’ll end up sharing a table and perhaps make some new friends as well. Whether you’re looking for a spot to hear some great jazz or just want to get together with friends for an evening out, the Jazz Klub U Staré Pani is the place to go.
