Based off the movie of the same name,
Dirty Rotten Scoundrels is a new musical that shows the pandemonium and hilarity of the lives of two con artists, one quite sophisticated and the other just a part-time liar. They team up to pull off hijinks, and their tumultuous relationship takes several unexpected turns. The story was decent, although it took a while to develop and seemed to be less focused than the movie. Random numbers were thrown into the show, like a Western-style hoe-down song. These were fun to watch but didn't always seem to be crucial to the story. A few brought down the house, such as "Great Big Stuff" and the title number.
Interestingly, both of these included standout performances by Norbert Leo Butz, who plays Freddy Benson. John Lithgow plays Jameson, the other con, and put together a solid performance. However, Norbert simply took the cake, and together they formed an effective team. The show also stars Sherie Rene Scott, who, unfortunately, didn't appear until fairly late in the show but provided just the right antidote for the guys, and Joanna Gleason, who had a significant role in the beginning but seemed to be hanging around for no reason. The set of the show largely made use of the turntable left over from Les Mis, which played at the Imperial Theatre before DRS. It was playful, if not always realistic, full of bright colors and rich ornamentation. All in all, this was an entertaining way to spend a few hours - Norbert's performance as Ruprecht (something that can't be explained, you have to see it) alone made it worthwhile.
