Since 1982,this concert series has been presented from May through early October, progressively growing more expensive, but with more and more variety of top-notch performers from comics to mainline artists in folk, pop, country, rock, blues,Latino and jazz. Prices for the concerts alone range from a high of $95.00 for Diana Ross to a low of $33.00 for Hiroshima. Cheap evening it's not,but its range of artists is quite astounding, and the setting, outside, with 1295 seats,is still relatively intimate, and it's bayside. Performances vary from 7,7:30 and 8 p.m. starting times. Here's a sampling of this season's extensive fare:The Beach Boys on June 13;Simple Minds on June 18;Righteous Brothers on June 27;Judy Collins on June 30;The Chieftains on July 14;Trisha Yearwood on July 26;Ross on August 11;Chris Isaak on August 22, Joan Baez on August 28;Smokey Robinson on September 20;and Sergio Mendes and Brasil on October 10. This short list doesn't do full justice to many excluded artists like Lyle Lovett and Al Jarreau that will also appear at Humphrey's,but check www.humphreysconcerts.com for full list, prices, and starting times. Some performances are already sold out,for this is a very popular summertime night spot in San Diego.
Parking in Humphrey's lot costs $6.00;there are some free parking lots nearby for the early birds only-they go fast. For a really pricey evening, add $45.00 to the concert admission price per person, and you have a dinner package at the upscale, adjacent Humphrey's Restaurant. All seats for the performance need to be reserved, even seats for children and infants,a rather non-subtle way of excluding them. After you purchase a Dinner package, you still need to call and reserve at the restaurant at least 24 hours before the show.Humphrey's is on Shelter Island Drive,so you get off the I5 Freeway at the South Rosecrans exit, and take Rosecrans west to the drive, then turn left onto it and Humphrey's will be on your right.
Definitely a Humphrey's concert evening is a SPLURGE, possibly for a special occasion,or if one of your really favorite artists is performing. There's a food concession stand and bar in the concert area,a little less expensive alternative to a Dinner Package.Tickets can be purchased at the Humphrey's Box Office, open 11:30a.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Tuesdays through Saturdays. They do not take checks, but accept cash or credit cards.Ticketmaster also handles their tickets(at an additional fee).
