Harrah's North Kansas City Casino and Hotel

Like all casino's, Harrah's has ridiculously awful carpeting. It also has a fairly standard collection of slot machines and games. There were slot machines, video poker, table games like craps and blackjack, poker and keno. It was spread over one floor with several cash-in (I think that's what they're called) points around the walls.

While the casino is obviously a draw for those staying at the hotel, there's no problem walking in for the evening.

I played craps for the first time with my brother at Harrah's on a Thursday night. I had absolutely no idea what I was doing and it seemed like a crazy idea that I could possibly guess what dice were going to be rolled, but I suppose that's why it's called gambling. We weren't exactly high rollers - we went in with $25, but we left with $45!

There were lots of people there, but it wasn't overly crowded. A number of older women seemed to be attached to slot machines via a card on a tether, but around the tables the crowd was younger and more exciting.

The bar and grill next to the casino had a live country band playing that sounded pretty decent, though we couldn't stay for the set.

This was the granddad of casinos in Kansas City. Driving up on it you will be amazed. There are thousands of opportunities to win a fortune, and even a loss makes you have the time of your life.

Kansas City is home to four riverboat casino's. Ameristar, Argosy, Isle of Capri, and Harrah's all have casinos here. The trend in the past few years has been away from the river boat and to a land based, riverside casino. You can gamble any way you would like here, Slot machines, Craps, Poker, Blackjack, you name it, they have it.

Harrah's Casino

This is my favorite KC-area casino. I get the sense that the Harrah's crowd is slightly more upscale than the Argosy or Isle of Capri crowd. Not that any of these riverboats draw the James Bond set, but the "redneck factor" seems a tad higher at the other places. Again, not that I have any problem with the 'necks...

Harrah's game are, for the most part, a little tighter than they are at the Argosy or Isle of Capri. Although Harrah's used to advertise 10x craps, I haven't seen anything other than double odds in a while. Some dealers will let you go triple odds on the six and eight; some won't. I can't figure out exactly when they will or will not allow this. Blackjack is always dealt from a six-deck shoe, and the rules seem to be typical of an LV strip casino (i.e., on the tight side). Still, this is a fun place to go, and the restaurants/bar are pretty good.

I believe that Harrah's still has a live poker room on one of their two boats. There's also a hotel attached to the casino, although I've never stayed there.
