Have just drunk in this excellent establishment over the Easter break 09. Drank there three years ago; different pub now: atmosphere still good, landlord/staff very friendly and welcoming (sorry don't recognise the previous reviewer's experience at all) and the beer is very good now - really improved in quality (I'm from Burton-upon-Trent originally). Highly recommended. New landlord seems to be making a real go of it. A superb jazz night there too 10/11th April 2009. Keep up the good work
Utterly Horrific...

Don't, under any circumstances, go into this pub. Definitely don't go in whilst eating a packet of crisps.
A group of us went in and stood at the bar for a couple of minutes, deciding what to have in this crowded, sweaty slice of Irish life. I was quietly enjoying its character and live music when the barman (possibly the owner, for reasons which I will explain) decided to tell my girlfriend that she shouldn't be eating wotsits in there. She explained that we were going to buy drinks, to which he replied that it was simply "etiquette". I had thought that he may have assumed she was underage until I finally caught wind of exactly what he was saying, at which point he continued to press the issue (what harm does finishing a packet of crisps that you started outside the pub do?)
I asked him quite politely what the problem was, as he was being rather rude, to which he completely flipped out, repeating what I had said back to me very loudly and shouting at us to get out of his pub, running out from behind his bar. We decided it was best for us to simply head for the exit, but before we knew it, he was pushing me out, literally man-handling me into the street. He continued to get in my face, my girlfriend telling him she wasn't aware of what we'd done wrong. He shouted at me to "grow up" calling me a "little child". I'm 20 years old, dress respectably and had had one drink prior to entering the pub. I was not rowdy, disrespectful or brash. I am certainly not a little child. He finally went back inside, only to come back out and continue on his rant, until I finally headed away from him, when he decided to leave us alone.
This was a totally horrific experience. I have never been kicked out of anywhere before, simply not being that sort of person. At all costs, stay away from this pub and more specifically, this barman. He has a clear superiority complex and decided to take out his frustrations on the first person he assumed had spoken to him in the wrong way.
