King Kong

King Kong fits perfectly into modern day Berlin. Like the city itself, it's hard to stick a label on it, but it's a cool place to drink some great beer and hang out with fun people. The bar is right in the middle of all the action, too, as it's located right at the base of Prenzlauer Berg (the hottest section of Berlin right now). The bar is on Brunnenstrasse, just a block up from the Rosenthaler Platz stop on the U 8 (subway).

The interior is painted dark red, with old movie posters here and there (headlined by the one from King Kong of course). Movies are projected onto the back wall on most nights. There is no cover to get in, except on rare occasions when a really well-known DJ is there, and bottles of Becks are only €2.30 (the local brew, Berlin Pilsner, costs €2.10 and comes in a larger bottle).

One of my favorite things about King Kong is the couches. They line the walls across from the bar and are spread out around the middle of the room and near the door. When it's warm outside, the entire front window is pulled open and you can sit on a small couch, drink your beer with the breeze blowing in your face while staring down the street at the TV Tower rising up nearby. The sounds of Prenzlauer Berg echo down from the pubs leading up the street across the way and mixes perfectly with the chatter and music coming from the other parts of the bar. This is also the perfect spot to strike up a conversation with the people sitting at the tables outside.

Besides beer, there is a wide assortment of mixed drinks and the bartenders are very friendly. Like everywhere in Berlin, the music is top-notch and the people gather to have a good time. In the summer time, the bar stays open until the sun comes up.

It's the perfect spot to either start a pub crawl up the nearby Prenzlauer Berg district, or wrap up an evening by enjoying a few last cold ones.
