Discoveryland USA

No trip to Tulsa is complete unless you visit the best family centered, outdoor theater at Discoveryland USA. Oklahoma's state song is of course Roger and Hammerstein's 'Oklahoma' and Tulsa has the best performance known. Every summer, nationally known singers and dancers come for 2 months to perform this wonderful musical. It is a must see for all ages.

The evening begins with an old fashioned picnic of BBQ beef sandwiches, slaw and beans. Sit at the tables under the trees or in the dining area. Where ever you sit be sure to watch the children riding the pony or rope the calf. After dinner, visit the reproduction of main street where you can shop for western attire or rock candy at the general store.

The performance begins with a pre-show including an American Indian dance, a can-can routine, and a song/dance time. I really enjoyed the way they end the pre-show, they sang Mr. Greenwood's "I'm Proud to be an American". Each veteran is asked to stand during the song and ends with a man with the America flag riding across the stage on a horse. It is quite moving.

The musical Oklahoma is a story of two lovers during the early 1900s, about the time the territory was made a state. It surrounds two main characters as they fall in love and enjoy the prosparity of the time. Don't despair, love is not the only theme in this story. There is gunfire, a dance and an old fashion dinner auction.

Aside from the musical, there is the famous berry cobbler served with vanilla ice cream. But be prepared to stand in line, it is quite popular. And don't forget your bug spray, it is outside of course.

The musical is short lived, running from the first of June to the end of August and is performed on the weekends with another play (Seven Brides for Seven Brothers) being performed during the week. Play tickets are $16.95 with dinner at $9.95 and children under 10 are free. Be prepared to arrive at the park around 6pm with an 8pm curtain call. This is fun for all the family, espically the kids. During the past 10 years, I have been 3 times and have never been disappointed.
