Dave Matthews Band

On December 13, 2005, I had the great pleasure of being able to see the Dave Matthews Band in concert at the Wachovia Center in Philadelphia. This has to be one of my top concerts of the year. Phil Collins takes the top spot.

Being lucky enough to experience the music behind the fourth most requested concert of the year was great. The group looked like they had a blast and Dave himself had a continuous little grin the entire time he played. He and his band have such chemistry, especially when they get into their mile long jam sessions.

Dave played the guitar all night long and the intensity with which he played really started to show along the fifth or sixth song when you could see him trying to shake the cramps out of his left hand. Regardless, a little pain was not going to keep this guy from doing what he loved. Dressed in a casual black tee and brown corduroys, he along with the whole band just seemed right at home. The respect between these guys was apparent in the way they interacted with one another starting with when they first entered the stage and Dave would greet each member with either a hug or a handshake, sometimes both. All during the concert each player got the opportunity to stand out and be showcased during their own little instrumental performance.

Their set lasted for about two hours and some of the titles played were “Louisiana Bayou”, “What Would You Say”, “Stand Up” and my favorite “Crash”. I was a little disappointed as neither “American Baby” nor “Two Step” was performed, but the entire concert put together was awesome. The stage was simple with basic lighting, and you could see numerous microphones posted all around the stage to record the music to be used for a possible future live album.

Dave Matthews Band was started in Charlottesville, VA, when Dave recruited Carter Beauford to play drums, LeRoi Moore the saxophone, Boyd Tinsley the violin, and Stefan Lessard the bass and electric guitar. What is interesting is that Stefan joined the band while he was only 16 years old and still in high school. Their first album was in 1993 called “Remember Two Things”. The band puts out many live albums with footage from their numerous concerts throughout the year. In 2000, Dave Matthews Band was the top grossing band in the U.S.

The opening act for DMB was a guy named Mike Doughty who I had never heard of, but at times sounded just like Dave himself. I ended up purchasing his disc in the lobby and was fairly impressed with his folksy sound.
