Description

'Forever Tango' dances through the history of this sensuous Argentina art form, illustrating the violence, sexuality and jealously in tango. The show makes its triumphant return to San Francisco's Post Street Theatre for a limited two-week engagement. 'Forever Tango' has an a 26-member cast which includes world class dancers, and an 11-person on-stage orchestra, including four musicians led by Victor Lavallen on the bandoneón. The dancing is brilliantly orchestrated and sizzling, as couples swirl across time and stage: some dances are slow, serious and sensual, some are quick and sharp, some lack its seriousness and are silly. The combination of these dances breaks up the sameness of tango, giving audiences a colorful portrait of the dance. The vibrantly colored costumes are dancer-friendly, making it easy for the countless kicks, spins and twirls. What makes the show is the sensational music score. The combination of string, piano and accordion represents the sound and image of tango. The music keeps Schubert-goers on their toes as much as the dancers, the creation of, and is directed by, Luis Bravo. Although the music and dancing is compelling, the show is short on narrative. 'Forever Tango' seeks to represent the history of Argentine dance and culture, but audiences are adrift trying to divine this story from a twirl and a tune. For audiences who enjoy a compelling story, characters development and singing, do not expect it to pop up in this two hour Broadway show, because at times 'Forever Tango' tends to resemble never-ending tango. Winner of multiple Tony and Drama Desk Award nominations, this show is a seamless stitching of music and dance with orchestral chords as sharp as a razor's edge cutting dancers and audience both. 'Forever Tango' is an inspired vehicle for presenting tango to a general audience.
