Decorated entirely in a Moroccan motif, this chic bar/nightclub is perfect to bring your date (or harum). Vaulted ceilings, intricate tile mosaics, column-supported arches, and blue velvet drapes create an exotic middle-eastern atmosphere. Candle light, jazz music, and soft semi-circular booths create a romantic atmosphere.
On weekends, however, there are larger crowds and it may be hard to get your own booth. There's also a DJ on weekends, making it a bit louder and less date-friendly.
Fez was originally opened downtown by the owners of the Joe's Pub and Bowery Bar. Due to its success, they opened a carbon copy (both are above the Time Cafe, which provides the food) on the upper west-side. It's not as "hip" of a crowd, but the Columbia students that come on weekends give it a youthful vibrance. The service at both branches is excellent--luckily they don't subscribe to the cool, indifferent New York club paradigm.
