The old man who opened this cafe back in the 1920's took paintings off of starving artists in exchange for a cup of coffee. As a result he got extremely rich and the artists became successful on the strength of their well-viewed works. Today, wall to wall paintings spanning decades, eras and movements, contribute to an atmosphere laced with nostalgia. Artists, intellectuals and courting couples visit regularly, making for an agreeable level of chitting, chatting, and cooing.
