Pleasure Island and City Walk

  • June 18, 2005
  • Rated 4 of 5 by che-che from Indianapolis, Indiana
Pleasure Island is about five or so clubs all in one area. You can buy a ticket for $20 and go to all of them. I chose to go to the BET SoundStage. The club is really nicely set up and relaxing, kind of laid-back--just what I was looking for. They do play all the lastest in hip-hop, rap, and R&B. The dance floor is downstairs, and the tables are upstairs, so you can look from your table down on the dancers below.

If clubs are your thing, you can also go to City Walk, located in Universal Studios. CityWalk is set up almost like Pleasure Island--you buy a ticket, and you get to go to all the clubs in that boardwalk. They have a club to fit everyone's tastes. The clubs I went to most were the Bob Marley Reggae Club and the CityJazz. CityJazz is nice because they play all types of music, from hip-hop to R&B to jazz, soul, and rock. On certain nights, you can watch comedy shows or even karaoke. The environment is nice, romantic, and laid-back, for the most part.

Pleasure Island

I have two experiences of Pleasure Island: being 21 and being under 21. Here they are (just so you know, you have to be 18 to enter Pleasure Island without a guardian):

Under 21
When I was 20 (I was turning 21 in a month--how annoying is that), I was slightly frustrated by the fact that my friend was 21 and I was not, so that kinda dampered the effect. Those of you with fakes, these people are psychotic about checking your ID, so don't even try it. They ask you to smile, they ask why your hair is a slight shade lighter (sorry, I needed highlights again)--it's a bit overdone. We arrived around 10pm, and the clubs were pretty dead. However, they do pick up around 11:30pm. My friend and I only visited Motion, because it's an 18-and-over club, and at every other club you either have to be 21, or it was for the older (meaning 30+ crowd). Now, I'm from a small town in Ohio, and all there is in my city are smoky pubs, so this was a nice change to me--NO SMOKE! I loved it! You do not reek when you leave here! The music was great Top 40, and no one looked overly slutty or thuggish. I couldn't drink, so I just danced the night away and had a great time! I would suggest arriving early, though, because the lines do get extremely long after 11:30pm.

Being 21
At 21, you can buy separate tickets for each club instead of paying a full admission. We still decided to pay full admission. Just so you know, the drink prices are very , so bring plenty of cash! The music this year at Motion was horrible. It was all mid-90s music! I was having flashbacks of junior high dances! We decided to go to Mannequins (which is a 21-and-over club) to see what it was like. (Disclaimer: I am by no means a homophobic person--I have many gay friends and work in men's retail. I am just making an observation.) The club was mostly gay. I don't believe it is listed as a gay club, but I had heard previously that many gay people did hang out there. I had no problem with this because gay clubs usually do have better music and dancing. Just throwing out a warning for girls looking to hook up with guys at this bar--it's probably not gonna happen. The floor rotates, which is awesome (bad idea if you are drunk, though), and the music is incredible--I had a good time, but I could only dance with my friend because no guy wanted to dance with me. It's fine, though--I still had a lot of fun.

So there are my two experiences. I did have very positive experiences, and I encourage you all to visit PI; it's a great time for spring breakers. The Disney Shuttles still schedule pick up till around 1 or 2am, so it's very safe and convenient!

There is something for everyone - Rock, Jazz, Country, Pop, 80s music (retro)...we had a ball hopping from one place to another!

I happen to like Country Music (which is so strange for a city girl) and while we visited Pleasure Island we spent some time at The Wild Horse Saloon. May 1999 and during that time Trick Pony was playing there. They rocked! Of course, they became a huge hit after that, at least on country radio! So you never know who may be playing and who will become a breakout star! Check it out!! No square dancing or line dancing necessary!!! I just kicked back a few cocktails with my husband and listened to some great country music.

We actually went club hopping and went from country to jazz (my hubby's favorite), pop and the 80s club. We had fun there! Lots of dancing...Boy George never sounded so good! We had a blast!

Pleasure Island is basically several nightclubs, one comedy club, more than a few shopping venues, and a live DJ in one large enclosed area. When you first walk in, the first thing that hits you is the music. There is a live DJ outside and a dance floor, and you haven't even made it inside a club yet. There are stands set up all over the place selling alcohol. They are a bit expensive, but hey, you’re at Disney's Pleasure Island - what do you expect? The comedy club was nice, but the comedian was not funny, so we left. We finally found the BET Soundstage. The music was was great and the dance floor was packed. Needless to say, this is where I spent the remainder of the evening.

WOW! We went here the last two times we were in Orlando and had a blast! From the moment you walk through the gates there is music everywhere and lights and action. They have video screens in the streets and carts selling drinks, jello shots (which are outstanding), and shooters. We did not make it to one of the comedy shows at "Comedy Warehouse", the BET soundstage hip hop club or to the jazz club. We did however do everything else and there is plenty to do!

The band that was playing outside was wonderful. We had a great time at Motion, a top 40 dance club with a large video screen. Mannequins dance palace is one of the best on the island. It is a techno dance club with a dance floor that rotates while you are on it. Very fun to watch or dance on. The Rock and Roll Beach Club was a lot of fun. They had a live band there both times we went and several different levels. The dance floor and band were on the bottom and there were pool tables and viewing balconies on the higher 2 levels. 8 Trax is another club that features 70's and 80's music. This one was the most crowded both times we went and everyone was having fun. Whatever your tastes are, you are sure to have fun and find something to your liking at Pleasure Island.
