Charlie Goodnight's is Raleigh's premiere location for stand-up comedy. Though the venue may not seem like much, Goodnight's has played host to a number of big name comedians such as Jerry Seinfeld, Robin Williams and Ray Romano. One look at the wall of the club's entrance, which is plastered with headshots, and you'll realize this place is serious about comedy.
The best thing about Charlie Goodnight's is there's not a bad seat in the house. The club is small enough so that no matter where you sit, you'll have a decent view. On the flip side, the tables and chairs are packed into the club's one small little room, so be careful if you're hit with the urge to fall over laughing. You could hurt yourself or someone sitting nearby.
Charlie Goodnight's is a nice option for a night out because the location also hosts two restaurants: The Old Bar and Champagne Charlie's. I've eaten at both and had no complaints about either. The atmosphere of the Old Bar is more casual. A great place to grab a drink before the show. If you're not sure what to order, step up to the shot wheel located just beside the bar. Champagne Charlie's has reasonably priced and unique entrees in a more upscale setting.
Perhaps the best reason to grab something to eat before the show is that restaurant patrons at Charlie Goodnight's receive discounted show tickets and reserved seating. If you purchase your tickets in advance, instead of buying them at the door, you'll be offered preferential after the restaurant guests have chosen their seats.
Traditionally, the Charlie Goodnight's lineup consists of a hosts who will tell a few jokes before introducing the opening act. The opening act will generally run about 30-45 minutes before the headliner comes on.
While the prices at Charlie Goodnight's aren't unreasonable, you can expect to pay slightly higher than normal prices for drinks. To save money on admission, try to catch a comedian on a Thursday or Sunday night when ticket prices can be $5 to $10 less expensive than they are on a Friday or Saturday night.
If you're fortunate enough to catch Jeff Dunham (www.onastick.com) performing - GO! The show far exceeded my expectations and left me rolling with laughter. I'd also highly recommend MaryEllen Hooper (www.maryellenhooper.com) should she happen to come to town again.
