In 1881, the founder of the Boston Symphony Orchestra wanted to produce concerts featuring light classical and American music, and the result was the beginning of this orchestra. In recent decades, under the direction of Arthur Fiedler, Harry Ellis Dickson, John Williams and now Keith Lockhart, this group has become a beloved Boston icon. The annual Pops Goes the Fourth concert is a longtime local tradition, which is followed by a series of free summer concerts at the Hatch Memorial Shell. The annual Holiday Pops series at Symphony Hall sells out months in advance.
