Francifol

Deemed one of the classiest bars in Santiago, Francifol is a happening place even on a rainy Wednesday night. It will always be a memorable bar to me, after I paid what was an equivalent to US$45 for a double shot of Johnny Walker Blue. When the bartender poured me the drink and I asked, Cuanto? to find out how much I owed, he shouted at my ear so I can hear his answer even with the loud music. I heard a “mil” which is a thousand in Spanish. I pulled my friend to ask her to translate for me. I told her that all I know is that “mil” is a thousand and my drink couldn’t have cost that much. I was right because my friend repeated RD$1,400 to me. I know that the Blue label of Johnny Walker costs a lot of money but I’ve never paid US$20 for a shot of anything, even in New York City! I would have created trouble if I backed away from paying the bartender, so I forked over my Dominican bills while my friend relayed how much food my drink could have bought her family instead.

Needless to say, it was the story of what La Chinita learned while in Santiago, and it was also the story the entire clan relayed to the other family members about me.

But Francifol is a really nice space that has a chance to be a romantic one if only they would turn the baseball game off. Presidente beers may cost US$9 but it’s a pretty cool spot to dance with the locals and experience the Santiagonero nightlife.
