Toad in the Hole (112 Osborne St.is a comfortable English-style pub that serves Guinness, Smithwicks, etc., as well as domestic beers such as Grasshopper and Traditional. Traditional English meals such as bangers and mash are served up, as well as an affordable and tasty brunch at the adjoining restaurant on the weekends.
Carlos & Murphy's (129 Osborne St.) has just celebrated its 25th year of operation in the Village and boasts the best nachos in the city. This restaurant/bar serves a variety of delicious Mexican food, with most dishes large enough to feed two people. The patio is large and sheltered, and the beer is cold and cheap.
For a bit more of a posh experience, visit the Village's newest restaurant/bar, Billabong, just steps away from Carlos & Murphy's. Billabong is an Australian/New Zealand-themed bar, with deep red walls and a long bar in the back. The pumpkin ravioli is delicious.
If you're planning a trip to Winnipeg, plan to visit during the summer months of June, July, and August, when the weather is hot and there are festivals running almost every weekend. Don't bother coming in the winter unless you absolutely must or are a sadist. At negative 40°C, winter here is a real drag.
Taxis in Winnipeg are relatively inexpensive. Duffy's Taxi can be reached at 925-0101. The public transportation system in Winnipeg isn't great, and for a few dollars more, you can save yourself a lot of hassle.
