Description: We were going to meet a friend that we hadn’t seen for two years, so we needed to find a place that was conveniently located, quiet enough so that we could chat (a lot!), kid friendly (my 10-month boy is about to start walking and he wants to practice a lot these days), and of course that served good food. La Barca it was.
Empanadas are their specialty, but there are other options like pasta, seafood, etc. An empanada is a kind of stuffed pastry, which can be fried or cooked in the oven. The second option is healthier, but in my opinion, the first one is tastier.
It’s not upscale dining, but that was not what we were looking for anyway. A waitress accommodate us in a convenient table, far enough from a couple of noisy ones, and with plenty of room for my boy to play without disturbing other clients. If weather permits, you can choose a table outside (which you should if you smoke, since Uruguayan law doesn’t allow you to smoke in closed places).
Food. Well I love empanadas, and I had no doubts about my order. I only had to choose the stuffing. I had the chicken with mushrooms, the "tropical" that is jam, cheese and pineapple, and the lamb with rosemary one, which was listed under the chef’s specials. Excellent choices! But the best thing came later: dessert. I had the banana with "dulce de leche". Oh my God!
This is a good place for those visiting Montevideo. It’s cheap, well located (just opposite Montevideo Shopping Center) and you can find some typical Uruguayan flavors.
