Jimmy Chung’s is a chain of Chinese buffet restaurants operating in various Scottish cities and Dublin the one I have visited it at Waverley Bridge in Edinburgh which, as the name suggests, is right next to the entrance to Waverley train station in the city centre.

Due to it’s central location Jimmy Chung’s can be very busy but even during festival time I have been seated almost immediately, dining is in a split level dining room with the tables crammed together fairly closely so it’s not the place for an intimate meal for two. Costs vary from around £6 for lunch to £12 for dinner at the weekend with children under 10 eating half price.

The food is laid out in a number of heated serving trays with separate sections for starters, mains and desserts. The queues for food can be chaotic, in theory you start at one end of the food area with a plate (or bowl for soup) and work your way round in a clockwise manner but in reality it was a case of grab what you can

My favourite part of a Chinese buffet is always the starters and there is a good selection here including duck and pancakes, chicken balls, sesame toast, chicken won tons, satay chicken, onion rings and spare ribs. All of the food is piping hot and replenished regularly so you can be assured of the freshness. The main courses are spread over two carts and there is a huge selection of rices, noodle dishes, curry, twice cooked duck, squid in some weird sauce, chips, lemon chicken, sweet and sour pork and various others that I cant remember, there is a reasonable selection of vegetarian dishes here too and they will also cook extra veggie food with no extra charge.

While they have a wide selection of food, I can't say I was impressed by the quality of it all. Some was delicious, the sweet and sour pork for example had just the right mix of chewy pork and sauce but others were not so great. Me and my daughter ended up picking the won tons apart to see if they actually contained chicken or were just folded pastry, she claims she found a tiny piece of chicken but I'm not so sure! The spring rolls contained just unseasoned beansprouts, not even a dash of soy sauce to pep them up and the chicken curry seemed to contain half a dozen pieces of chicken in the whole tray with the rest made up of onions and peas. Another shortcut was the use of shredded cabbage instead of spring onions to make up the duck pancakes.

Time for pudding and Jimmy Chung’s is no exception in the buffet stakes in providing a pretty bland selection comprising of ice creams, cakes and banana fritters. I love banana fritters but hate the fact that when I order them from my local take away I get a mean dribble of syrup, not so here where the syrup was in a bowl and I and you can help yourself to as much of sugary goodness as you want!

Jimmy Chung’s is cheap and cheerful, the food is mainly good with a huge selection of dishes and the service is prompt but the ambience leaves something to be desired with many diners behaving like pigs at the trough and cramming as much food into their mouth as possible to get their moneys worth. It’s probably the best of the Chinese buffets that I have visited and it is good for a family meal as it is so informal and kids eat half price. Whether I recommend Jimmy Chung’s depends on what you are after, if you are looking for huge platefuls of deep fried food then this is the place to go but if you are looking for fine dining then best to find somewhere else to go.
