Description: If you're in Havana, chances are you'll see lots of evidence of one of the city's most famous bars. La Bodeguita del Medio is an iconic little restaurant in the old part of the city very near to the main cathedral. The famous yellow sign and ramshackle street are characterized in paintings, posters, prints, and greeting cards all around the markets and souvenir shops.
Open since 1942, and claiming to be the home of the tasty cocktail, the Mojito, many people just stop in for a taste of the "original" tropical drink. The bar is in the front section and is quite a small space with only an "L"-shaped bar top with a handful of stools. The wooden counter is lined with rows of mojitos which sell almost as fast as they're poured. Be aware, though, as the price tag is a bit steep for the city, but worth just saying you drank one where many famous people before have sat.
Photos and hand-written notes line the walls from the note-worthy guests in the past. From Hemmingway to Nat King Cole, browse the crowded walls to find a treasure. If you sit in the bar, you'll soon be serenaded by a small local band that fills the room with traditional tunes.
For a little bit less hectic surroundings, pick a seat in the back area where the restaurant dining tables are situated in small rooms. The menu is pretty traditional and a little bit pricey, and the service is a little unfriendly and short. (Although the bar tenders keep the guests happy!). Be sure to bring a marker so you can add your name (or an entire drawn picture) to the walls which are filled with graffiti from floor to ceiling. If you visit in high season, be sure to make a reservation...but even if you forget, it may be worth the wait just to check out one of the city's hot spots for yourself.
