Description: By Saturday night we were ready to walk out and have a little bit of a change. The restaurant in the hotel was okay but we were getting a little claustrophobic and decided we wanted to get out, walk around and see what there was near the hotel.
Across the street and down one of the side streets was Athens Restaurant. It didn’t look like much on the outside and we did debate whether it was where we wanted to go. We didn’t want to have to take the car out of the parking garage that made Athens a lot more attractive.
The restaurant was not too busy when we arrived and we were seated quickly. The menu offers a lot of choices and frankly neither of us is very knowledgeable when it comes to Greek food. The last time I ate in a Greek restaurant was in Chicago at the last get together and Carole and Graham ordered the food, I just ate and enjoyed.
This time we were on our own. I like lamb so I was pretty sire I was safe ordering a lamb dish and Kathy ordered something with pasta. Yes I know, usually I write down our food in great detail but this time I didn’t so I can’t tell you what it was called. It was however served in a slab, like it was baked ziti with sauce and meat. Kathy enjoyed it.
We started our meals with salads and bead and I have to say that they were very good. We finished all the bread in our basket and the salads had a nice sprinkle of feta cheese.
When my plate of lamb came I almost passed out. It was huge. There was rice with tomato sauce, beans, green beans, celery and other vegetables. It was just a really pig plate full. I was barely able to put a dent in it. Kathy’s slab of pasta was also huge and more than she could possibly eat especially considering that we had eaten the salad and the bread.
Needless to say we had no room for supper and since we were staying one more night we didn’t want to take the leftovers with us. The price of the food for the amount that you get was very good value.
The menu did have traditional Greek food like stuffed grape leaves and spanikopita. The tables have cloth table clothes and if our waitress wasn’t the most friendly we have ever had, was efficient. We did notice that when the staff knew the customers they were excessively outgoing so they obviously have a lot of return clients.
All in all it was a good experience. Not the best I have ever had but far from the worst.
