Los Dorados de Villa refers to the troops of Pancho Villa, whose nickname was "Los Dorados" (the golden ones) and the restaurant is a homage to Pancho Villa and the Revolution. I guess that at the beginning of the restaurant it was a word game with "Tacos Dorados" (hard fried tacos) but I didn't had a chance to ask.

The place is so small that at the entrance is a sign "if you have a reservation ring the silver spoon gently (a doorbell) once. If you don't, please wait for an empty table". The door is closed when there are no spots available.

After giving the name of the reservation (felt like whispering a secret password at the entrance of a castle) we were allowed inside a very old dinning room with decorations from the Revolution era: pictures, pots, drawings, paintings, crank telephones, carved wood furniture, etc.

The menu's front page is a printed reproduction of an old newspaper where the assassination of Pancho Villa was described in detail. At the bottom is a legend: "Please make a phone reservation as our occupancy is limited and we want to give you a good service in your next visit." and also "Good cooking can not hastily be done. Only care and rest can warranty it's exquisite flavor"

Drinks came in good time but the food took the promised time to prepare, we were a big group of 20 and ordered the most famous dishes: Pozole Verde and Enchiladas Zacatecanas. Both were excellent and the prices are very reasonable, 65 pesos for the enchiladas, 35 pesos for a bowl of guacamole, main dishes ranged from 55 to 90 pesos; soft drinks 15 pesos per can, beer 25-30 pesos a bottle (April 2009). It's difficult to find such low prices in a "touristy" restaurant, but in Zacatecas that was the norm, and something to appreciate.

The restaurant is one block from Rafael Coronel Museum, and not far from the Cathedral, you can walk there to enjoy the atmosphere.

This restaurant is a must try when you visit this pretty city.
Do reserve if you plan on visiting at lunch time or during Easter week or Christmas vacations. 922-5722. Close
