Description: My friend in Yerevan explained to me that she always went to Square One on payday, a treat for the month's hard work. Armenian cuisine as yummy as it is always available to the majority of youngsters at home, so the lavishly orange and modern Square One small chain is the type of place which attracts their custom and also adds to the variety of places open to a tourist visiting Yerevan.
The branch of this chain that I went into was in a central business district of Yerevan with entirely new streets, the restaurant didn't look out of place with it's open seating and spotless floors and tables. The staff were efficient and it wasn't long before one of the pub's fine beers (a bit pricey as I recall) was sitting next to me whilst I was trying to choose my meal.
Brought along with the beer was a traditional snack and one I've made numerous times since, carrot sticks soaked in lemon and salt, a great and healthy beer accompaniment. The pizzas were tempting as were the burritos, I managed to avoid the cakes too despite them looking delicious - I try not to eat cakes out, it seems like a waste of money, although I'm not quite sure how I rationalise that.
In the end I chose a pancake filled with vegetables, cheese and spices, a sort of gigantic wrap which turned out to be delicious. My friend ate the cake and I must say I weakened and tried a bit - that was also very yummy. Not many people seemed to go there for a beer and coffee was the name of the day. This smelt great but I can't say I tried it. All in all, it was a pleasant experience but it's pretty dear for downtown Yerevan.
