Description: In spite of the large numbers of visitors passing through Postojna each day in the height of summer, there is a real lack of eating places and independent visitors staying overnight, especially those without a car, will be surprised how difficult it is to find somewhere to eat in the evenings, in particular during the week.
This is why we ended up at Pizzerija Minutka. Situated near the main square Minutka is easy to find; just look for the peachy coloured detached building and you’re there. There are indoor tables but in early September we chose a table outdoors. The interior is nothing special; in fact it’s no different to most modern Slovenian restaurants, well maintained and clean, if a little bland.
There is as much outdoor seating as indoor so it shouldn’t be hard to get a table except perhaps on weekends in the middle of summer. We are gradually learning more Slovenian and managed to trick the waiter who greeted us when we entered the restaurant into believing we were Slovenians. As a result we weren’t given much time to peruse the menu and when the waiter returned we had to come clean. The waiter went away to give us more time – far too much time in fact and we found we had to then wait ages for someone to come back. We did try to catch someone’s attention but the staff seemed pretty poor at looking out for their customers.
The menu was easy to navigate, split into useful sections such as hot and cold starters, pizzas, meat dishes, fish dishes, international dishes and so on. It may be called "pizzerija" but the menu is nicely varied. Being in the Karst region I decided to try a dish from the hot starters section that would enable me to sample two local specialities – "Njoki s teranom in pršutom" (€5.70) – gnocchi with teran wine and prsut ham (the Slovenian version to prosciutto). My companion decided to put Minutka’s wood burning pizza oven to the test and ordered a large Mexicana pizza (€7.10). To make my dish a main course, I added a salad from the salad bar situated in the dining room.
I went to make up my salad straightaway as directed by our waiter. Unfortunately the salad bar could really have done with being topped up and it was looking rather sad. Again I couldn’t find a waiter when I wanted one and had to cobble together a salad from what was left. On a positive note, there were plenty of dressings available including delicious Slovenian pumpkin seed oil.
Although it was billed as a starter, I received a generous serving of feather light gnocchi in an almost black sauce that contained plenty of wonderfully salty ham. I ordered a glass of fabulous Teran wine to go with it and was not disappointed – one of the best dishes I’ve ever eaten in five years of visiting Slovenia. The pizza was a good size too and the toppings – several kinds of cheese, olives, pepperoni, sweetcorn – were plentiful.
Pizzerija Minutka is a decent enough place but it’s not very exciting. I got the impression that my gnocchi dish was a highlight of the menu and that really the rest is quite average. However, it’s probably the best that town-centre Postojna has to offer and as the menu is varied it is probably a good option for groups. In addition to meat-free dishes, I also noticed that the pizzas included a gluten-free choice which is a rarity in Slovenia.
Minutka is open all day long and offers set lunches which looked to be good value – soup, main course with accompaniment, a side salad and a dessert for 8.50.
