I'm lucky - I get to eat in some really nice restaurants, including a few Michelin starred ones. This restaurant beats most of them hands down.
Guiseppe, our host at local B&B Arena (worth a stay - lovely rooms, central and low cost - http://www.arena-bb.it/en/index.htm), suggested Da Ugo for an authentic Veronese meal.
We booked and settled down for, we thought, a nice meal in a good looking and charming restaraunt. We were wrong (but in the nicest way).
My starter, ravioli with Donkey meat, might sound terrible to a nation of horse lovers (and I have no idea if it was real donkey) , tasted delicious. The pasta was utterly fresh and just under al dente, with a sublime soft meat filing.
Rather than let us fumble our way around the excellent regional wine list, the sommelier offered us a glasses of a soft red to mingle with the meaty pasta. Exceptionally tasty!
But the best was yet to come. We both plumped for fillet steak in a red wine sauce. I can honestly say this was one of the best pieces of fillet I've eaten. The sauce was sublime, and perfectly complemented by the incredibly rich (15%!) red the sommelier brought. Simply one of the best taste sensations I've had.
The meal was rounded off nicely with fabulous home made pastries and a great chat with the owner and a couple of the staff - we felt so welcome and I can't recommend Da Ugo highly enough.
If you go to Verona, go to Da Ugo.
The sommelier was excellent and took trouble to explain his suggestions and we were delighted with how well his recommendations worked with the meal - especially the rich red wine with the fillet steak.
Your passion and commitment to good, honest food cooked with care really shines through.
Thank you for a perfect evening. We will make sure we recommend you to a few guidebooks and to our friends.
All the best
