A Greektown Favorite

A Greektown Favorite

Greektown in Chicago has probably the best Greek food in the world. And the Greeks are great restauranteurs - I heard somewhere that they own about 80% of ALL the restaurants in Chicago. You can't go wrong for a reasonably priced meal if you head to Greektown.

Athena's is one of my favorites, especially on a sunny day. They have a wonderful enclosed courtyard with lots of tables for eating in the sun or shade under an umbrella. (In the winter I like nearby Santorini, with its cosy fireplaces). I've been going here for years and am never disappointed. I always have the Village Greek Salad - no lettuce in this one, just cucs, tomatoes, peppers, and feta cheese. It takes me a long time to get it cut up just the way I want it. Then when I've finished eating it, I enjoy perhaps the best part - sopping up the excellent salad dressing with Greek bread. That's my whole meal!

But you may also want to try the lamb. The Greeks really know how to cook lamb, whether it's mouth-watering loin lamb chops (you can order 3 or 4 - 3 is MORE than enough!) or the lamb and artichokes in egg-lemon sauce. This is a Halsted Street specialty and it is outstanding. My son always orders the lamb and vegetables wrapped in fila dough. So we all have our favorites. I'm sure the fish, pasta, and other meat dishes are good too, but who ever gets around to ordering them?

We always have a bottle of inexpensive white Greek wine (around $22). We can rarely fit a dessert although the baklava is wonderful. (There's also a Greek pastry shop down the street where you can buy some to take home!)
