Elilai Asia Grill Restaurant and Bar

Belvedere East 2F, Ngerkebesang Island, Koror
Tel: 488 8866

This is probably the most up-market stand-alone restaurant in Palau. It is also one of the largest. It is hidden away in an apartment building on the island of Ngerekebesang which is connected to the main Koror island by a causeway. If you don’t have your own vehicle, the only way to get here is by taxi.

Elilai considers itself an Asian fusion restaurant. The original chefs were from Thailand but the food is not Thai. Their advertising claims a fusion of Asian spices and Italian Mediterranean style. There are dishes from around the region and everything I have tasted has been good. The ambiance is quite different to other places in Koror with a touch of Japanese and south-east Asia mixed together. The indoors dining area is spacious and stylish while an outdoor terrace has stunning views of the lagoon in the daytime and the lights of Koror at night. There is a large bar area, a lounge and there are some private rooms.

A large glass window allows views into the kitchen to see the chefs at work. On my last visit there seemed to be more kitchen staff than customers. There were also something like seven waitresses so service was excellent. On being seated you are given a cold towel and a drinks menu. Beer is $4.00, soft drinks $3.00 and an extensive range of cocktails from $6.00.

The menu is extensive. Specialties are lobster (roasted $38.00) and crab (black bean crab $25.00) but this is only the start. Green curry is $12.00, grilled prawns $17.00, beef pepper steak $29.00 and Thai noodles $11.00. I have had the yellow curry ($10.00), the delicious grilled pepper tuna with spicy sauce ($19.00) and the pork ribs ($18.00). There is a 10% service charge added to all bills. There is a daily set lunch from $10.00 and set dinners from $38-56.00.

I continue to be impressed at how this restaurant has achieved fine dining in a relaxed atmosphere. There is nothing stuffy about this place and the mainly Filipina waitresses are friendly but efficient. The lighting is subtle, the wall decoration attractive and the background blues/jazz music adds just the right touch. It certainly is the venue for a special night out.
