Perhaps the Best Fish and Chips in the United Kingdom

Ullapool is one of my favourite fishing ports, and we consider it a crime not to visit the town without getting a traditional portion of Haddock and Chips from the Seaforth restaurant or take away in the centre of town, right by the harbour front.

The Seaforth Restaurant isn’t a particularly impressive or exciting looking restaurant, and it often caters for the over 70’s market, as many of the coach tours that drive through the region often stop here. Given that I’m not quite at the age where I want to eat my dinner with people that might conceivably smell of wee, we tend to nip to the takeaway section at the end of the restaurant. That way, we also avoid the agony of the old dears deliberating between their choices of mushy or garden peas.

Both restaurant and chip shop takeaway regularly wins awards for the quality of its reasonably priced food, and so we are drawn back here each time we visit the town.

Actually, if the weather is something like reasonable, then I would choose the take away every time, as it means that I can get to sit down near the harbour pier and watch the world go by. My habit of sitting on the harbour wall seems to be mirrored by many other visitors. The area now has a whole line of shiny new benches, fresh for the 2009 tourist season. It’s very relaxing to sit and watch the fishermen preparing to sail or to look in hope for seals bobbing in the harbour (and yes, I have seen some). Unfortunately, it’s less relaxing to guard your food from the overeager seagulls, but unlike gulls in other parts of the country, their attempts at stealing your food are half hearted!

Obviously, the chip shop is a fish fast food restaurant, but if the idea of a cheap (£4.50, $6) huge deliciously fresh slab of haddock cooked in crispy beer batter doesn’t float your boat, you can choose some more unusual choices, such as calamari, or even Queen Scallop and Chips for just a little more. I don’t think there will be many chip shops that could offer the same choice.

One thing to remember with the take-away is that although salt and vinegar is provided free of charge, together with little wooden forks, any sauces (tomato or brown) are sold in those silly little environmentally unfriendly sachets. Your portion will be huge, so don't be silly and order the "large" option, and although it is a shame, don't feel too guilty about leaving some batter and chips because you are too full. The gulls will get lucky.

If you need a drink after your takeaway, pop into the nearby Ferry Boat Inn. It’s been a while since I have dropped in, so I won’t say too much beyond saying it always sells well-kept beer and is full of character.
