I used to live in Alaska, and developed an extreme fondness for Alaskan seafood (especially halibut and salmon) while living there. On a recent business trip to Anchorage, I was craving a good halibut sandwich, and local coworkers highly recommended "The White Spot." They told me I wouldn't be disappointed, and they were right!
The restaurant itself isn't much to look at - in fact, unless you're really paying attention, you'll miss finding it on 4th Street. 4th Street is a one-way, and you'll see the little cafe off on the left side of the street. It's just a little "hole in the wall" with only a small yellow sign to designate itself. When you walk in, it's the kind of place that takes you back to the 1950s or 60s. It hearkens back to the days of small diners/cafes. You can order your food to-go, sit up at the soda fountain-style bar (as I did), or sit at one of the small tables. Don't be surprised if you find it to be a little cramped! The kitchen area is open to view, and you can watch as the owner/cook cooks your meal right in front of you. Everything is handmade and homemade here.
I ordered the halibut sandwich, and watched as the owner hand-battered a fresh fillet of halbut and then cooked it for my sandwich. The french fries are hand cut - not like the flash frozen ones you get at one of the fast food joints. The halibut sandwich was out of this world! By far, it was the best halibut sandwich I've had in Alaska, and I've tried several at many different restaurants throughout the state. You'll also enjoy visiting with the owner, service staff, and local regulars in this place who will share lots of stories about the area and aren't afraid to give you recommendations.
