Description: Tonight David and I enjoyed the company of our friend Alice and her 10 year old son Logan for our traditional Friday fish fry. West Allis has plenty of choices and we decided to try someplace new - Steven's Steakhouse. While they are known to be a restaurant, they would be more like the typical Wisconsin bar that also has a dining area. You know it when you walk in and the stench of cigarette smoke hits you.
With that being said, I will say that we all enjoyed the fish fry and felt we had exceptional value for the Lent special of $9.95. While not an "all you can eat" fish dinner, I assure you that what they served is "all" you can eat!
Their fish is cod, with a light beer batter. I thought it was very similar to tempura batter. You have your choice of french fries, homemade potato pancakes, hash browns or onion rings. ONION RINGS?? I had never heard of that being offered with fish. As much as I love them, I cannot imagine them being a good side with delicate fish. David and Alice did the potato pancakes with apple sauce while Logan and I opted for the crinkle cuts.
The cole slaw was the sweet type but seemed a bit too wet, with too much sauce. It was good, but anytime it drips, it is probably too wet for my liking. The tartar sauce was good - most like homemade.
Before dinner, David and I enjoyed a tapper (draught beer) which was $2.00 for a 14 oz. mug. When Alice arrived she had a $7.00 strawberry margarita. OUCH - that is expensive!
About the establishment . . . when you enter the main doors bring you into the bar. Not a good first impression due to the cigarette smoking. We asked to be seated in nonsmoking, which didn't exist. The adjoining dining area had around 15 tables and the entire area probably held around 50 people total. Every table had ashtrays, not a good sign for someone who doesn't want to smell smoke during or after eating.
The smoke didn't really seem to be bad while eating, although I must admit that when I got home my wool car coat and sweater smelled horrible. ICK at the stale smoke smell. Good thing I'm leaving town in a week and that I can leave that coat at the dry cleaners as we head out.
Dinner was $9.95, which is $1.00 off their regular price due to Lent. They also offered a full menu of steaks and seafood including daily specials posted on the board. The blackened catfish ($15.95) and broiled walleye pike ($16.95) caught my eye. They promote their steak and rib specials at menu prices that seemed very fair.
Overall, I would recommend Steven's Steakhouse only if you can get past the smell of the stale cigs. Had it been much worse, we would have walked and taken a pass.
They are open Tuesday through Sunday, closed on Mondays. You can call ahead if you'd like to make a reservation.
