Best People Watching Spot to Dine in Esperanza

Bananas is a bar and grill style restaurant right on the Malecon (main beachfront boardwalk area) of Esperanza. The atmosphere is definitely laidpback beach-bum bar casual.

Catch a table outside for the premier spot to watch the nightly car cruise up and down the beachfront street -- it seemed to be an entertaining mix of locals and tourists in their rental jeeps. And everybody else who isn't driving will be walking past Bananas central location.

The food was typical grill food -- burgers, fries, chicken, nachos and that kind of thing. Nothing fancy, but it all tasted good, and the beer was cold. The prices were fair compared to many other places around town.

Both times we at at Bananas, it was packed and there were many waiters or waitresses. But we weren't in any hurry and it was a fun spot to sit around, so instead of complain about slow service, we marveled at how hard our waitress was working.

Bananas also runs a guesthouse, offering pretty cheap rooms. But don't even think of staying there unless you want to stay up late partying and not get a lot of sleep because it is really an active place.

The food was bad, the drinks were hot, the service was inattentive, and the bathrooms were ridden with mosquitoes. Have a hamburger and a daiquiri, as these may be better choices. There is a beautiful view of the beach across the street.

This is on the main strip in Vieques. You'll have to find the local dining gems away from the strip.

This place serves very typical American cuisine of hotdogs and hamburgers, which surprisingly was way in abundance in PR. At Bananas, just remember to have the tostones (fried banana chips) -- they're crunchy with a mild taste, as addictive as potatoes chips, but more satisfying!

Bananas

Bananas is the quintessential Caribbean beach bar and cafe. It sits right on the "Malecon" or promenade, in Esperanza, which is the smaller of the two towns in Vieques. The Malecon features lots of small, cheap guesthouses, casual restaurants and small bars, and it's fun to walk up and down with the Caribbean Sea stretching out to one side, and the bars and cafes on your other side.

Bananas is great for an after-beach drink (try a Strawberry Daiquiri with fresh berries crushed right in - yum!) and a burger or big salad. For something a little fancier, try the Red Snapper or Jerk Chicken Club.

The atmosphere is great: friendly and very relaxed. It's a large, open-air space with a big bar off to one side and the restaurant on the other, with nice views of the ocean as you eat or drink and relax.

Photos are coming soon, I promise!

Bananas Restaurant

This is a very popular place on the island which serves delicious fresh fish. It has a lovely outdoor terrace. The atmosphere is lively, the service friendly. You quickly get the feeling that this is THE place many locals hang out...great food and decent prices.

If you're not into seafood, they also serve grilled meats, ribs, chicken and even pizza.

The night I was here I had a delicious lobster with crabmeat - it was my last night on the island and I decided to blow my budget. No regrets.

You can get a good meal with an impressive array of home-made desserts for around $20-25.

There is also entertainment - rock, jazz, and reggae music keep this place very much alive.
