Don's Grill - Our Favorite Eating Spot

This is my mom's favorite eating spot! Whenever she comes to town she always asks us to take here to Don's Grill. She never wants to eat anywhere else in Hilo so we often come here. When we (my husband and I come to Hilo we always take our friends or family from out of town here because they like the food quality and the fast service. It is always consistent. The restaurant dining area is always clean and you can either eat in main area or you can choose to eat under the tinted glass area near the street. The food is typical local food and their menu is crammed with all kinds of good food. They offer breakfast, lunch and dinner. We usually come here at night and order their dinner entrees which include soup or salad, a starch like steamed white rice or mash potatoes, a meat dish, and steamed vegetables. My husband likes their turkey or chicken dishes and my son likes their teriyaki chicken dinner entrees. They also have an extensive lunch menu which includes local favorites such as burgers, saimin, chili and rice, loco moco, and won ton min. They also serve healthy salads such as chef's salad, taco salad and ceasar salad. Their specials are ono such as oxtail soup, fish and meatloaf dishes. I would recommend that you come here early for lunch because the parking lot gets filled quickly from 11am. - 1pm. especially on weekends. There is more parking on the side of Hinano Street but you might end up waiting in a long line to get a seat. I would recommend sitting near the main dining room since there are booths and it is much cooler than sitting near the enclosed glass area. It can get noisy in the greenhouse area because the noise seems to bounce off the large glass windows. Also the noise from the bus station is very loud. The waiters are very friendly and attentive. Service is quick and you will see the hustle and bustle of the restaurant especially when it gets busy. To get here drive along Highway 19 (Hawaii Belt Road) and continue on Kamehameha Highway east passing Bay Front and the Wailoa State River Park on your right. Turn right on Manono Street then make a left on Piilani Street after the Baseball Field. Go down one block and turn right on Hinano Street. Don's Grill will be on your left in a small building that almost looks like someone's house (it is located in a residential area). I would highly recommend eating here especially if you are looking for a nice, affordable, clean restaurant with good service and good food.
