Rong Guang BBQ Seafood Restaurant

Locals, of course, know where the best food is, and we were fortunate to have friends in Singapore. On our last night in Singapore, my husband's friend brought us to what he said was his favorite restaurant on the whole island, Rong Guang BBQ Seafood Restaurant.

It didn't seem easy to get to by public transportation; it was away from the city center, near the National University, and we went there by car.

When we arrived, it looked like a typical Singaporean hole-in-the-wall eatery: half the restaurant was open-air, the other half was indoors; the china was cheap food-court style ... a little like a hawker center except that there was only one "hawker." It also looked quite popular, as almost all the tables were taken, and everyone seemed to be enjoying their food immensely. Above the counter, laminated computer print-outs boasted of how Rongguang was considered by reviewers to be one of the best eateries in Singapore.

We sat down and my husband's friend ordered some chilli crab and encouraged us to order anything else we wanted. "Everything here is good," he said. We ordered some pork ribs and some sambal prawns. A waitress brought us some fish crackers while we were waiting for the main dish.

The food came. And true enough, each bite was exquisite. The chilli crab was divine; the sambal prawns were scrumptious; and I ate more of the pork dish than I should have. It was easily the best meal we'd eaten in Singapore.

Our friend went to speak to the owner, whom he'd gotten to know over his years of coming here. He told the owner that we were visitors from the Philippines, and as a welcome gift of sorts, the owner gave us a free dessert of almond jelly and longan (similar to a lychee).

Later on, our friend explained to us that Rong Guang had begun as a small stall in a hawker center and had, over the years expanded and opened this restaurant branch. We thanked our friend profusely for bringing us here. "Tourists don't really know about this restaurant, but it's really really good." And to punctuate his statement, he ordered some extra chilli crab to take home for his mother.

I estimate our food cost around S$15 per head, but the cost can go lower or higher depending on whether the seafood you order is season. Rong Guang BBQ Seafood is open daily from 5 pm to midnight.
