My sister Erika and I had just finished running a couple of errands around Pensacola, Florida and in need of some serious sustenance. We hadn't pulled anything out of the freezer, and we had one of Erika's dogs, Mocha, in the car with us. Erika suggested we go home and she would call in a to go order at The Hunan Wok, one of Erika and her husband Todd's favorite Chinese restaurants in town. The downside was I was to take Erika's car and pick it up while she was mowing the lawn. Being from out of town, I am not familiar with the area, but Erika gave me great directions to the restaurant, which is only 1 1/2 miles from her home and in the WalMart Shopping Center in south Pensacola.
I was on the computer cancelling some reservations for a weekend trip when Erika got off the phone from the Hunan Wok and said that I would have to leave now, or they would be very upset at the Hunan Wok if I was late picking up our dinner. "Great!", I moaned to Erika, "All I need is some angry Chinese person swearing at me in their language about not being on time!"
So off I went to the Hunan Wok in Erika's car making sure I wouldn't be hit by the crazy Florida drivers Erika warned me about. Sure enough when I arrived at the Hunan Wok, our food was ready and cost us $24.35 +tip for Chicken Lo Mein, two of each of Shrimp and Chicken Egg Rolls, General Tso's Chicken, and Kung Pow Chicken. Both the General's Chicken and Kung Pow came with white rice, so the cost of the meal was very good indeed for all of the food Erika and I got.
I brought the food home, and Erika was surprised I made it home so fast (Hey! I didn't get lost!), and while she finished mowing the lawn, I got the food out. It was piping hot, and my General's Chicken had bright green steamed broccoli with it. I helped myself to some General's Chicken, Lo Mein, and rice and sat down to watch ESPN News for a bit and ate.
The food was great. My General's Chicken was not spicy at all and didn't have that dominant ginger taste that I have had with some General's Chickens from other establishments. One of my egg rolls was great, but I forgot the hot mustard sauce. Oh well. The chicken lo mein was full of veggies and good taste, and Erika enjoyed her Chicken Egg Rolls and Kung Pow Chicken. There was a lot of food, and we couldn't eat it all at once, so there are plenty of leftovers for future meals.
The Hunan Wok is open Monday-Thursdays 11-10:30; Fridays-Saturdays 11-11:30 and on Sundays 12-10:30. It is located in a busy shopping center and is a great dinner break after your shopping or running errands.
