FS Restaurant

This ostensibly Italian Restaurant is a few large steps away from the Premier Travel Inn and looks directly onto St Peter’s Square. Up to seven in the evening the restaurant, like many in Manchester, offers a three-course meal at a special rate. Here it will cost you £8.95 for the three courses with a choice of at least 5 dishes for each course. I was too late for the meal deal and you won’t be surprised that by 7.15 the place is almost empty. However, prices here are very reasonable and I surprised myself by eating Greek in this Italian restaurant.

I felt that service was a bit off hand and there was no attempt at small talk from the waiter. The menu was unceremoniously plonked on the table and a long wait ensued before he returned to take my order. I opted for stuffed vine leaves followed by knuckle of lamb and I asked for a bottle of Boddingtons (a beer from Manchester). The beer was quickly delivered and although it was chilled it was a less than average drink. I much to prefer a draught beer but they don’t serve it here and although it claimed to be bottled I choose to think this was out of a can. Anyway it satisfied a thirst – just about!

After a time a “neat” plate of tightly stuffed vine leaves with a great little salad drizzled with a tasty dressing was brought to the table. I was offered a grating of black pepper corn and then I tucked greedily into the portion. It was extremely tasty and when I was half way through when a bread roll was almost thrown on the table. It was welcome to mop up the dressing, but the delivery was excessively poor.

I didn’t have to wait too long for the main course to arrive – a huge knuckle of lamb that had been slow roasted in a superb spicy tomato sauce. A small but ample portion of vegetable accompanied it and although the carrots and broccoli was nicely prepared the potatoes were firm and undercooked. I was peckish and the lamb just dropped off the bone – it was real delicious.

Overall the food was well prepared and I was not disappointed with the taste experience. However, the waiters lacked care and attention and consistently appeared to “want to be elsewhere”. I know that they were recovering from a busy pre-seven serving and the restaurant was, at this time of night mainly occupied by single diners (me included) I didn’t feel looked after at all. Indeed I was real happy when I’d finished the meal to grab the bill and exit. I won’t be returning here and I certainly didn’t leave a tip. Food decent but I’m afraid that customer care skills were sadly lacking.
