This pretty courtyard at our hotel seemed the ideal place to have a pre-dinner drink.
The aroma of roses and other blossoms scenting the air gave the candlelit area a fairy-tale setting. Pink and white linen cloths and the shimmering crystal emitted an invitation we could not resist.
We decided to stay and have supper. The young waiter was very pleasant - he spoke some English and was eager to hear about hockey and soccer.
We studied the menu - most of the dishes were meat, fish, poultry, pasta. We didn’t fancy pasta, and being vegetarian, the other choices were out. We asked if the chef would make us an omelet. The chef came to our table and offered to make us cheese and mushroom omelets, baked potatoes and any vegetable requested. He was very nice and spoke fluent English.
To start, we had a crisp salad with mushrooms, green peppers spring onions, tomatoes and celery, topped with light vinaigrette dressing. Two really could have shared the generous size.
The omelet was light, peppery, and filled with mushrooms. Carrots in a cream sauce and fresh green peas accompanied this dish. The baked potato was huge, again a serving for two.
Along with our meal, we shared a bottle of Slovenian wine - Laski Rizling produced in the Drava Valley, light and dry. Too bad we cannot obtain Slovenian wine here in Canada - we count it among the best we have tasted.
For dessert – yes, despite all that food, we asked our waiter to recommend a local dessert. I cannot remember the name, but it was a dumpling filled with pine nuts and raisins, this was served with fresh cream and was delicious.
We enjoyed a leisurely meal, lovely surroundings, the tables were widely spaced and the staff excellent.
Our total bill excluding tax was $30 Canadian!!!
