Stella's Blue Sky Diner

If you ever need a place to eat while you are in Des Moines, Iowa, look no further to Stella’s Blue Sky Diner. The restaurant originally opened up in 1988 in downtown Des Moines and now they can be found in Urbandale, one of the many suburbs of the capital city. Their motto is "Get Lost in the '50s." Stepping into Stella’s is like stepping into a black and white episode of I Love Lucy turned color. The walls are decorated with signs from the '50s highlighting shows such as The Andy Griffith Show and I Love Lucy as well as hit movies such as From Here to Eternity. The fifties era is even recreated down to the outfits with the waitresses wearing the red and white checkered dresses and the waiters with their green soda jerk uniforms. A fifties restaurant would not be complete without the tunes of Elvis Presley, Buddy Holly, and the other great artists of the era.

The menu is entirely Americana. A large kids menu makes this place ideal for families. For the person with a hearty appetite and need something to go with the main course, try the Fried Cheese Balls or Wet Fries, which are covered with gravy, from the appetizer menu. If you want to skip the appetizer and go straight to the meal, try one of the fourteen different hamburgers. From a basic hamburger to a pizza burger or the famous John Wayne burger loaded with BBQ sauce and onion rings, there is something for everyone. The feature burger is the Rocket Burger, loaded with bacon, three different cheeses, jalapenos, and topped with a fried egg. They have a great sandwich menu with everything from Reuben’s to Grill Chicken sandwiches. If you want meat and no bread, try the fried chicken. For those on the healthier side of eating, they have great salads also.

Make sure you leave room for dessert. With a huge ice cream and pie selection, you truly feel as if you are on any Main Street in America ordering from the soda jerk. Their signature items include their diverse and sometimes weird concoctions of milkshakes. On my visit, I had the PJ’s favorite, which is Vanilla ice cream blended with Peanut Butter, Bananas, and Potato Chips. I know what you are thinking and it tasted great. Some of the other shakes include Birthday Cake, Caramel Apple Pie, Leprechaun, Smores, and Autumn Amaretto. For the adventurer, try the weirdest milkshake on the menu, Rocky’s Breakfast. It is a mixture of ice cream with bacon bits and a raw egg. It makes me wonder who the person who came up with that concoction is.

The prices are more than reasonable with most entrées between $7-9. They open daily at 10:45am and close at 9pm except on Friday and Saturday nights when the hours are extended to 10. For a full view of their menu, visit their website at www.stellasblueskydiner.com.
