The Golden Phoenix is my favorite, favorite, favorite Chinese restaurant, and since Chinese is my favorite type of food, I would have to say that this is my favorite restaurant in the Black Hills. Other people agree -- it has won the Best Chinese Food in the Black Hills Award. It is the last place I ate before I moved to the Netherlands, and the first place I ate when I moved back home.
The food is served quickly, and it's always perfectly delicious. I stare at the menu for ages, even though I know it well, because I just want to order all of it. Beef and broccoli and cashew chicken are my favorites, but the beef lo mein or Mongolian beef are worth a try. My aunt loves the vegetarian options.
The egg rolls are fantastic. I don't personally care for sweet and sour soup, but everyone I've talked to who likes it says Golden Phoenix has the best.
On Sundays they have a buffet for about $8. You'll find six main dishes, two soups, egg rolls, wantons, rice, fried rice, and lo mein noodles, as well as some peaches and little donut-type cakes for dessert.
On weekdays they have a lunch special for about $6 which includes a main dish, rice, choice of soup, an egg roll, and a wanton. There's always more food than you can eat in a sitting without feeling stuffed, so just plan on taking some home.
The staff are fantastic. The owner knows my aunt and I when we go in (what does that say about us?) and all the waitresses are phenomenally friendly. The restaurant itself is clean and tastefully decorated. There is a lot of space between tables, which I really appreciate.
Take-out is available.
Don't miss this place!
