At Tatiana's

At Tatiana's is one of the newest restaurants in Rapid City -- and the city's first Russian restaurant.

It's a large restaurant, sparsely decorated with Russian nesting dolls and vodka bottles. We saw Tatiana herself working -- she moved here from Russia a couple of years ago.

The menu is of medium size with a variety of dishes, many involving chicken. On the left page are a lot of typical American meals -- steak, chicken, etc. But the right page is full of Russian specialties, ranging in price from $7 to $10. For an extra $2.50 you can add the salad bar. All meals come with rice, salad, and a vegetable.

I ordered the stroganoff, which also came with mashed potatoes. The green beans were so-so, the salad was typical iceburg lettuce with ranch, and the rice was going cold and sticky. The stroganoff, however, was delicious.

My friend ordered a dish called the Czar's purse. It was chicken and mushrooms in a sauce, all wrapped up in a crepe-like breading. It did look like a purse. It was a very attractive presentation. He liked it very much -- so much, in fact, that he never even offered to let me try it.

The Russian side of the menu also includes Pineapple Chicken and a Cornish game hen! That dish is a little more expensive -- around $15.

There are also soups and appetizers available.

Our waitress was a sweet Russian girl who spoke flawless English and was always ready to help.

The food was good -- but that's about it. It was nothing terribly special. I was very happy with my meal, very glad I went there -- but I doubt I'll go back. However, I grant that they are just getting started -- the restaurant is barely a month old -- so as they find their stride, perhaps the menu will grow. I hope they do well here -- it's nice to have a Russian restaurant in town.

Try it out if you're staying in the Hills for a long time and are ready for something new, or if you've never eaten Russian food before. Or go just for the hospitality. However, if you're in the Hills on a shorter trip and want to get a better meal for your dollar, try elsewhere (see my reviews on Golden Phoenix and Curry Masala).

At Tatiana's has a website -- www.attatianas.com -- where you can find basic information on a basic web page. You can make reservations online, as well, if you want to be guaranteed a place to sit.
