Armadillo's has some of the best ice cream in the city. My aunt loves it so much, she keeps a calendar of Armadillo's flavors of the day in her car.
It's closed in winter, which is a tragedy. My aunt buys a quart of her favorite flavors -- coconut and butterscotch -- to eat between October and March when it is closed.
Ice cream treats range in price from about $2 to $5. You can get a cone with the flavor of the day, or any of their other specialties. They have dozens of flavors of shakes and malts -- I'm partial to butter pecan, peanut butter, or chocolate mint. If you really have a sweet tooth, try their banana split or specialty sundaes.
This place is hugely popular in the summer -- I've never been there when there weren't a bunch of people enjoying their ice cream. You can order inside or at the walk-up window outside. There are restrooms inside, as well as a few tables if you want to get out of the heat. There are also tables outside. That's where we sat today, even though I wished I had brought my sunglasses.
The small shake or malt is plenty to share, but if you're really hungry you can order a larger size -- the largest being jumbo, which I've never even looked at, but I'm guessing it's a whole lot.
There are also a few sandwiches available to order, though I've never have. I don't go to Armadillo's for lunch -- if I'm there, it's because I want ice cream!
For quality, price, and selection, you really can't beat Armadillo's.
