Watching People Park in Puddles

Eats Café was our destination for lunch based upon a recommendation from another guest at our resort. We decided to park at Foster's and walk over, as we also needed to buy some food to bring back for future meal preparation.

Every table in the place was occupied, which convinced us we had chosen our lunch place well. We were asked whether we would like to sit at a counter overlooking the parking lot. This was fine with us and we were able to observe how people approached the dilemma of parking their car in a huge puddle and then trying to find a way to the sidewalk without getting their feet wet. It made for a delightful half hour of entertainment. I ordered Conch Fritters with a jerk sauce-hot and somewhat reminiscent of chicken or fish nuggets. My husband very much enjoyed his Rasta Man Hamburger, which was served with enough fries to share with his hungry wife.

Risky Business

Dining at "Eats Cafe" is risky business. I have worked in the restaurant industry for 40 years and I certainly know my way around a restaurant kitchen and dining room. My husband had a bacon cheeseburger with fries and I had the nachos. His burger was dried out and overcooked with two crumbled pieces of bacon that appeard to be about half a strip that was recycled from 12 hours earlier at breakfast. His fries were dark and oily ---s sure sign the restaurant is trying to save money by keeping old oil in the fryers. In fact, I would venture to say from the color and texture of the fries that this oil had not been changed out in two weeks if not longer (a real health hazard to diners). When he complained about the fries he was only offered more of the oily mixture, which he quickly declined. A manager, which should have been alerted to a dissatisfied table did not come by. When we left, we expressed our dissatisfaction to the manager on duty who looked stooped over and beaten down (he really didn't want to be there it appeared). He didn't care much about our dissatisfaction, which, to me, indicates he doesn't care about his customers OR the quality of the food that is sent to their table. We will never return and I would strongly advise against ordering anything that would go into a deep fryer (food poisioning is a nasty thing to have while on vacation). BTY, my nachos were very good.

Eats Cafe is right across the street from the Westin Causuarina Hotel and is a great place to have a reasonably priced lunch or dinner. The atmosphere is fun, with festive music and TVs situated throughout the restaurant. The food is good, not great. However, after paying ridiculous prices for hamburgers, sandwiches, and salads at the Westin, Eats was a great alternative.

Eats Café has a more diverse menu. The fish and chips (Thursdays only CI$6.95) was somewhat overcooked, as were the conch fritters (CI$5.95 and the sauce is spicy!). The calamari was better (CI$6.95); other items were not remarkable but moderately priced. Cozy 50’s decorated. 2.5 stars
