Mom and I went to see our friend Linda during a unusually warm winter day about a month ago. The topic of conversation turned to food, and we got to talking about things we got in Rhode Island but that aren't available in Idaho. Mom and I mentioned Newport Creamery, a Rhode Island-based ice cream parlor and restaurant that served the best ice cream, Awful Awfuls (thick shakes), and sundaes east of the Mississippi. Linda mentioned the Delsa's Ice Cream Parlor near her place, and before we knew it, we were suddenly getting a craving for ice cream sundaes and banana splits.
So Linda, Mom, and I drove over to Delsa's on Ustick Avenue in Boise. Upon entering the ice cream parlor, you are sent back to days of soda jerks and old-fashioned architecture. Delsa's is a tiny place, but its ice cream is big in flavor and variety. Delsa's is a local dairy that delivers its ice cream to many of the Treasure Valley's restaurants.
Drooling as we looked at the ice cream flavors in the coolers in front of us, it didn't take us long to decide what we wanted. Mom had a hot fudge sundae, and I chose a strawberry sundae. Linda was the little piggy and had a big banana split with three different scoops of ice cream. It was about 70 degrees that day, so we decided to eat outside on the patio. My sundae brought back memories of those days that Mom took my sister Erika and I to Newport Creamery for sundaes as a treat. It was that good! Mom and I finished our sundaes, but Linda had to get a doggy bag for her banana split. Her eyes were bigger than her stomach!
Delsa's is open year-round to satisfy your ice cream cravings. It is located about a mile from the Cole Road and Ustick Avenue intersection, on the left side. The ice cream is very rich and should only be a really special treat. They also serve espresso if you don't want ice cream, but you would be crazy not to try their ice cream, which is the best thing west of the Mississippi!
