Description: We had decided to make our way to Splash Mountain for one last ride before finding ourselves something to eat. Unfortunately when we had hiked all the way across the Disneyland Park to Critter County we found that Splash Mountain was down. Since we were so far across the park we thought we might as well give the Winnie the Pooh ride a try and then hunt for foo. However on our walk around the corner we spotted the Hungry Bear restaurant.
This restaurant is certainly tucked away which may account for why it was virtually empty in the early evening on a busy summer day. The natural wood makes it merge in to the surroundings as well. Since we were all rather peckish we thought we might as well give it a try as the other places we had walked past had looked quite busy.
This is a counter service restaurant with the menu displayed above the ordering window. We then realised why the place was so quiet, the menu is not at all extensive and for some bizarre reason they do not serve regular fries on sweet potato ones which certainly don’t appeal to a lot of people. However we decided that we would give the place a try and placed our orders. These are collected to the right along with cutlery and condiments.
One of the advantages of the place being so quiet is that there were lots of tables to choose from so my son and I decided to stay on the upper level but chose a table near the edge overlooking the water. This was wonderful and peaceful and we felt a million miles away from the manic crowds that make up Disneyland in August.
It wasn’t many minutes before my husband and daughter bought our trays over and we could inspect what we had ordered. They are all served in rather unattractive green baskets which came as a surprise as our other counter meals had come on proper plates.
My daughter and I had both opted for the Crispy chicken sandwich. She had asked for hers without the honey-mustard sauce but with sweet potato fries whilst I had opted for the zesty slaw accompaniment. My husband and son had both gone for the classic cheeseburger and both had the sweet potato fries.
We soon realised that my daughter’s meal did have the sauce on it and although I offered to take it back she decided to give it a try and actually found that she really liked it. I must admit that I didn’t think there was anywhere near enough sauce on the sandwich and it was a little dry. The zesty slaw was a little odd and hard to describe but it was really tasty. I expected a mix of cabbage and carrot with a lemon dressing but it had more fruit in than that with other sliced vegetables. I knew that my son would hate the sweet potato fries but doesn’t like slaw or onion rings either so he took the side and I ate several of his fries. My daughter and I love sweet potato so we were really happy with these, they were slightly crispy and really delicious. My husband ate most of his more because he was hungry rather than because he liked them, he would much rather have had regular fries.
My husband and son both enjoyed their burgers though, they said they were soft and tasty and well-cooked without being dry and burnt.
We didn’t have a dessert but we dad have diet sodas each and the bill came to about $54.
Although this probably wasn’t the best quick service restaurant we used in Disney we may well return as the location is perfect. It is so calm and quiet and it is a delightful place to sit and relax it’s just a shame that they don’t serve a slightly better menu.
